If you make any changes to an already existing pattern, or draft your own pattern from scratch you should true the darts to make sure that the garment will sew together properly and accurately.
The dart legs need to be the same length and the bulk of the dart should be folded in the correct direction, so that when sewn the dart follows the shape of the garment.
