Hello! My name is Julia and I’m lucky enough to be the newest member of the Made To Sew team. Aneka and I thought it would be good for me to say hello, introduce myself and let you know a little about what I am going to be doing to help Aneka.
I am a mum to two gorgeous girls, wife to my lovely (and tolerant) husband, Chris, who doesn’t complain (too much) at the amount of fabric in our house, and also foster mum to cute and mischievous hearing dog puppies that come to live with us as part of their training. My main role at Made To Sew will be doing admin, emails, making up samples, and basically helping Aneka with anything that will help her to focus on the exciting projects that she has planned for this year. I might even do a bit of teaching too!
Whilst I originally trained as a midwife, I’ve secretly always wanted to make my own clothes. My only experience of sewing at school was making a scrunchie – I didn’t even have long hair! My mum had a sewing machine, but she never used it. Through my teen years my love of horses took over but I never really lost that desire to make clothes. I got back into sewing the first Christmas I was with my boyfriend (now the ‘tolerant’ husband) when I decided I wanted to make us Santa Sacks. It wasn’t until seven years and two children later I finally started making clothes. I did a dressmaking course at a local fabric shop and made a jersey mock wrap dress; I think I unpicked the whole thing ten times over before I actually finished it. To say I was proud was an understatement!
After the excitement of finally making my first dress there was no stopping me! The only problem I found was, being plus-sized, it was difficult to buy commercial patterns that were even close to my measurements. After looking at many different courses I came across Aneka’s Fitting Masterclass – it was the best course I’d ever done! I learnt so much in those 12 hours; I loved how flexible she was in her approach to teaching and how she was so patient and clear. I decided I wanted to learn to pattern cut and make my own patterns so I continued having 1-2-1 lessons with her – I have done many of her other courses, too!
Ultimately, over the last two years I have gained a lovely friend and my dream job!!
So that is me! I am very excited to part of Aneka’s team and look forward to meeting many of you over the coming year.
