Product Description

Are you looking to learn new skills working with stretch fabrics?

Join us and learn the techniques required when working with stretch and jersey fabrics, the stitches to use on the sewing machine and overlocker, preparation and finishing techniques. We will also teach you how to adapt a commercial pattern (for stretch knits) to your individual shape and size. You are welcome to bring along your own pattern or work with the Jersey Wrap Dress (an adapted version of the Vogue 8379).

  • A ‘how to’ guide for working with stretch fabrics
  • Seams and stitches for stretch fabrics
  • Understanding commercial patterns, how to adapt them for your individual shape and size
  • How to use the overlocker, available stitches and uses
  • Sewing stretch knits on a sewing machine
  • The importance of interfacing jersey (what to use and when)
  • Introducing sleeves in stretch knits
  • Sewing a hem in stretch fabrics

Level: It is necessary to have previous sewing experience on the sewing machine. Experience with stretch knits and the overlocker is not necessary. If you don’t have an overlocker at home you are welcome to create the garment on a sewing machine.

Material: Provide the fabric and notions required for the pattern of your choice. If you wish to make a Jersey Wrap Dress we recommend you purchase the following pattern (Vogue 8379). Please provide approximately 3 metres of jersey fabric for the dress (depending on size), matching Gutermann Polyester Sew-All Thread 100m and co-coordinating overlocker thread e.g. Moon Thread x 4. We will supply stretch knit interfacing for a small fee.

Please inform us in advance should you wish to use our sewing machines and / or overlockers during the class. If you are bringing your own overlocker you must be able to thread the machine and have a basic understanding; if you would like to brush up on these techniques please attend our How To Use: Overlocker class.

Another amazing course from Aneka. Made a lovely perfectly fitting dress that I will wear again and again. Thanks to Aneka for her amazing knowledge and teaching. Her classes are always fun and relaxed but you learn so much. Using all my newly acquired techniques to make changes to other patterns now so that they fit beautifully. The downside is the housework is not getting done as all I want to do is sew! I would really recommend you join one of her classes and see for yourself.

I have enjoyed all Aneka’s classes that I have attended. I was particularly keen to attend this class because i have never worked with medium stretch fabric before. As always Aneka showed both patience and wisdom and was very keen to pass on the necessary skills.
I have not quite completed the dress but can tell it will look stunning

Brilliant! I can hardly believe I’ve made a wearable garment in just 15 hours, but Aneka makes it so easy to achieve that you don’t even notice the time passing and suddenly it’s done. The atmosphere is calm and relaxed, and the experience very enjoyable, with learning combined with good company and conversation. Aneka is an excellent tutor and I cannot recommend this or any other class with Made To Sew highly enough.

For any of you reading this and wondering if this class is for you, absolutely the answer is yes. It will cater for those who have lots of sewing experience, or any like me who have never done anything like this before. I had not sewn for over a decade, and the only garment I’ve ever made was an A line skirt at school in the early 80’s. However, inspired by the Sewing Bee as so many have been, I decided to upgrade my old mechanical sewing machine last year (which frankly I’d become scared to use) to a new electronic one and in so doing had the good fortune to discover Made To Sew for a private quilting lesson. This class sounded too good to miss, and a jersey wrap dress is one of my favourite things to wear, so despite some reservations as to whether I was capable I signed up. I need not have worried, Aneka is so calm and patient and makes everything really easy to understand. Not only have I sewn a gorgeous dress from stretch fabric, but I now know how to customise a pattern to fit me perfectly, which is a skill I intend to put to use in many future projects. Sign up and you won’t be disappointed.

I am not sure what to say, I just simply loved every minute of my sewing experience, making the jersey wrap dress. I learned so many new and very useful techniques and came away after every session with inspiration and confidence to tackle sewing patterns on my own at home.
The studio is light and a comfortable space to be in and Aneka is a very patient and knowledgeable teacher.

I truely enjoyed my 5 weeks and will be going back to join another class in the future.

This really was a brilliant workshop.

We went through the making of the dress in a steady even pace and learnt such a wealth of information on the way. Aneka is such a kind and patient teacher. The classes were light hearted and fun and I came away with a beautifully fitting wrap dress as well as having some happy Friday nights. Thanks too to Marcel for his help with my therapy and sewing nights….

No doubt this class will teach you something new! For me the entire course was a learning process staged in a excellent professional studio with all of the necessities to hand (and for purchase). Aneka is a breath of fresh air and a compliment to each student and adjust to each individual ability. This course is challenging and the fabric is challenging also thus I highly suggest you use what Aneka offers in shop since she knows it well. Working with the overlocker is amazing and proves itself the first time to be a valuable investment. You will not leave without a dress of your own efforts. It will be beautiful of course! Many thanks to Aneka for the help and ongoing support to building my confidence in the sewing world. xxx

I attended Aneke’s ‘Make a Jersey Wrap Dress’ course and ‘Masterclass Zip Fastenings’ because, even though I have been sewing since childhood, I wanted to refine my sewing techniques, learn how to get a commercial dress pattern to fit properly, and learn how to use my brand new Husqvarna sewing machine. All these outcomes were achieved with Aneke’s clear and detailed verbal and written instructions. Her attention to detail in all aspects – initial measuring of pattern, cutting out, sewing techniques, ironing techniques, finishing seams etc. – is particularly exacting for the student, but this after all is why I went.

The general atmosphere during the courses was friendly. The studio facilities were excellent.

I can thoroughly recommend her courses.

I can only give a very positive recommendation for Aneka and her sewing lessons. She has made a welcoming environment for learning to sew. Her studio is well set up, organised and clean and she is a patient instructor with genuine concern that I am happy and learning new skills.
The wrap dress was fun to make, bit of a tricky fabric, but Aneka taught me all the skills required to overcome any problems.
