Take your sewing to the next level. Learn tailoring techniques that you can use in future garments to create a professional finish.
Bring along a jacket or coat pattern of your choice and learn the skills and techniques you require to take your sewing to the next level. From hand sewing techniques such as hand worked buttonholes, bound buttonholes and pad stitching to speed tailoring methods ,we will teach you the skills that you would like to learn, creating a professionally finished jacket in the process.
You will receive a free initial consultation for the Tailoring class to discuss your learning requirements and pattern choice. Fitting and pattern cutting techniques can be completed in class time, alternatively please attend the Fitting Techniques class to fit and create a calico toile of your pattern. You will learn a selection of the following:
- Jacket pattern cutting and construction
- Creating and fitting a calico toile
- Working with interfacing (iron on and sew-in methods)
- Speed tailoring techniques
- Hong Kong binding
- Pockets; inseam, concealed, welt, patch
- Bound buttonholes, hand worked buttonholes
- Pad-stitching, shaping collar and lapel
- Working with shoulder pads and sleeve heads
- Introducing a hand sewn or bagged lining
Level: It is necessary to have previous sewing experience working with garments. We recommend you attend our Dressmaking or Shirt Making class if you would like to brush up on these skills. Prior tailoring experience is not required.
Material: Bring along a pattern and material of your choice. We recommend choosing a pattern that will enable you to learn new skills. Please feel free to contact us with any questions regarding your pattern choice. The amount of garment completed during the class will depend on the pattern you choose and it’s complexity.
Please inform us in advance if you wish to use one of our sewing machines during the class.
